How To : Basic Foundation and Concealer Application

Hello Beauties,

The foundation of any crisp look is smooth skin;  if you're like me and you're not blessed with the smooth complexion of a model, then you've got to rely on foundation and concealer to get the job done.

These simple steps will help you achieve a smooth and flawless complexion
So let's begin:

1. Always start out with a freshly washed face

2. Feel your skin with the back of your hand, how does it feel ?  if your skin is oily, you are okay to skip to the next step.  For all other skin types apply a moisturising cream and allow it to sit and absorb for 5 minutes. Try to use a cream specifically made for the face with an SPF level of 5 or more (My pick - Oil of Olay for combination skin with SPF15)

**OPTIONAL** - Apply a primer all over the face before you begin applying the concealer and foundation (My Pick - GOSH velvet finish primer, or Smashbox studio finish water base primer)

3. Take a small amount of your concealer on a concealer brush and sweep it under the eyes.  You want to concentrate more of your product on the inner corners of the eye to help conceal any under eye darkness and blend down and out to the outter corner of your eye. Don't be afraid to get your hands in there as well, the natural heat from your fingers will help the product move on the skin. (My pick - Cover FX C20)

4. Look for any other areas on the face that may need to be covered (IE any blemishes)
***PLEASE NOTE ***
If you are doing makeup for another person, and they have any type of skin issue/ blemish that you do not recognize DO NOT feel obligated to continue with the makeup application.  A blemish like a cold sore is highly contagious and can be spread through brush to skin contact

5. Take your foundation brush and begin to apply the foundation of your choice in downward strokes from the nose out to the cheeks. Using downward strokes is especially important on your forehead, using upward strokes can force product into your pores and create breakouts.   It is important to concentrate the majority of your product on the inner area of the face so you can blend your product out, this will eliminate any harsh lines or "masking" effects on the face. The type of foundation brush you use is totally up to you. There are a lot you can choose from, just use the one that you're most comfortable with.

6. Look at yourself in the mirror both close up and from a short distance.  Look for any spots that could use more coverage, or any blemishes that are not completely concealed.  Use either your foundation or concealer to cover these spots until you are satisfied with your appearance.

7. Take a step back from the mirror you're working in and look at your face again to make sure everything is well blended and looks natural

*QUICK TIP* - If you find there is a build up of foundation in any one area (I find that the hair line a particularly bothersome place to blend properly) lightly dab a sponge in short, quick, dabs across the area to further blend your products.

TADA you're done :D
